STOKE-GABRIEL, a parish in the hundred of
HAYTOR, county of DEVON, 4 miles (S. E. by E.) from
Totness, containing 638 inhabitants. The living is a
discharged vicarage, in the peculiar jurisdiction of
the Bishop of Exeter, rated in the king's books at
£16. 11. lO., and in the patronage of Sir Stafford
Northcote, Bart., the Rev. John Templar, and the Rev.
F. Belfield, alternately. The church contains an ancient
wooden screen, and at Watton there was formerly a
chantry chapel. There is a place of worship for Baptists.
The navigable river Dart bounds the parish on
the south. Capt. John Davies, the discoverer of Davies'
Straits, was born here.
