STOODLEY, a parish in the hundred of WITHERIDGE, county of DEVON, 4 miles (S. W.) from Bampton, containing, with Highley St. Mary, 466 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Barnstaple, and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £20. 0. 2., and in the patronage of N. Fazakerley, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Margaret. On Warbrightsleigh hill, in this parish, are the remains of an ancient beacon, said to have been erected by Edward II.
