STOPHAM, a parish in the hundred of ROTHERBRIDGE, rape of ARUNDEL, county of SUSSEX, 4 miles (S.B. byE.) from Petworth, containing 139 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester, rated in the king's books at £5.12. 8., and in the patronage of Walter Smith, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is partly in the early > and partly in the decorated, style of English architecture. The river Rother flows through the parish, which is bounded on the east by the Avon.
