STOWE, a parish in the hundred of BUCKINGHAM, and county of BUCKINGHAM, 2 miles (N. N. W.) from Buckingham, containing, with the extra-parochial liberty of Luffield- Abbey, 478 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £11. 14. 7., and in the patronage of the Duke of Buckingham. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. Stowe is celebrated for the princely mansion of the Duke of Buckingham. Hani"' mond, the elegiac poet, died whilst on a visit here, in 1742.
