SUTTON (BISHOP'S), a parish in the hundred of BISHOP'S-SUTTON, Alton (North) division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 1 mile (E. S. E.) from New Airesford, containing 474 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, with the perpetual curacy of Ropley annexed, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester, rated in the king's books at £19. 10. 2., and in the joint patronage of Sir Thomas Baring, Bart.,and John Deacon,Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas. There is a place of worship for Independents. Fairs are held on the Thursday after the festival of the Holy Trinity, and on November 6th. The Bishops of Winchester had an ciently a palace here, the remains of which have been converted into a malt-house.
