SUTTON-on-the-HILL, a parish in the hundred of APPLETREE, county of DERBY, S miles (W. by S.) from Derby, containing, with the township of Osleston with Thurvaston, and the hamlet of Ash, 638 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Derby, and diocese of Lichfield and Coventry, rated in the king's books at £4. 16. 8., and in the patronage of the Rev. W. Ward. The church is dedicated to St. Michael. Twelve poor children are educated and apprenticed for an annuity of £20, bequeathed in 1722, by Anne Jackson. The school-house was erected by subscription in 1736. All the lands in the township, except one farm, were given, some years ago, by Humphrey Chetham, Esq., to the Blue-coat hospital at Manchester.
