SWALLOWFIELD, a parish partly in the hundred of CHARLTON, county of BERKS, but chiefly in the hundred of AMESBURY, county of WILTS, 6 miles (S. by E.) from Reading, containing 983 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, annexed to the vicarage of Shinfield, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury. The church is dedicated to All Saints. -There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. A fair is held here on June 9th. The celebrated Lord Chancellor Clarendon, after his retirement from public life resided at the manor-house, then the property of his. son, where he wrote "The History of the Rebellion."
