SWINDALE, a chapelry in the parish of SHAP, WEST ward, county of WESTMORLAND, 12 miles (W. N.W.) from Orton. The population is returned with the parish. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, endowed with £ 1200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Vicar of Shap. The chapel was built at the expense of the inhabitants, in 1749. Near it is a school, founded in 1703, by Mr. Baxter, and endowed with a rent-charge of £25.
