TATHAM, a parish in the hundred of LONSDALE, south of the sands, county palatine of LANCASTER, comprising the townships of Ireby and Tatham, and con-- taining 880 inhabitants, of which number, 765 are in. the township of Tatham, 11 miles (N. E. by E.) from Lancaster. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, rated in the kingV books at £12. 5., and in the patronage of John Marsden, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. James, is a hand-, some modern structure. An old Roman road passes through the parish, in which there is an extensive colliery. A fair for cattle is held annually on March 12th, in the village of Lowgill. A school is endowed with an estate producing about £28 a year, which is applied for the instruction of all the poor children of the lower division of the parish.
