TAYNTON, a parish in the hundred of GHADLINGTON, county of OXFORD, 1 mile (N. W.) from Burford, containing 324 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Oxford, rated in the king's books at £7. 9. 4., endowed with £600 royal bounty, and in the patronage,' of Lord Dynevor. -The church is dedicated to St. John. The river Windrush runs through the parish, in which are considerable quarries of excellent freestone. Five-boys are educated by a schoolmistress, for the interest of £100, bequeathed by John Collier in 1725.
