TERLING, a parish in the hundred of WITHAM,
county of ESSEX, S miles (W.) from Witham, containing
781 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage,
in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of London,
rated in the king's books at £10, and in the patronage
of J. Strutt, Esq. The church is dedicated to All Saints.
There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists.
Benjamin Jocelyne, in 1775,'bequeathed an annuity of
£1.0 for teaching ten poor boys. In 1269, the, Bishop
of Norwich had a palace and park here, which was
subsequently the residence of Henry VIII. Its chapel
possessed the privilege of sanctuary, and as such afforded
shelter to the celebrated Hubert de Burgh, when
he had fallen under the indignation of Henfy III-, V?J
making a new road through the grounds, in l824,(about
three hundred gold and silver coins were turned up>
and, upon further search, a jar was discovered, containing
two large rings, and thirty small pieces of gold,
with onie silver coins of twelve Roman emperors, as
bright as if just taken from the mint, and in regular
succession, beginning- with Constantius, and ending
with Honorius. Terling is at no great distance from
the ancient Roman stations at Colchester, Maldon, and
Fleshy.
