THIRLWALL, a township in the parish of HALTWHISTLE, western division of TINDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 4 miles (W. N. W.) from Haltwhistle, containing 293 inhabitants. The ancient mansion of Wardrew, situated on the eastern side of the river Irthing, has been handsomely fitted up, to accommodate visitors who resort to the adjacent spa of Gilsland. On the western bank of the Tippal bourn, which is here crossed by the great Roman wall, are the ruins of the once strong castle of Thirlwall, occupying the summit of a rocky precipice. The walls of this fortress were nine feet thick, vaulted within, and defended by an outer wall of great strength.
