THORGANBY, a parish in the wapentake of OUZE-and-DERWENT,
East riding of the county of YORK, 8i
miles (N.E. by N.) from Selby, containing, with the
township of West Cottingwith, 381 inhabitants. The
living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of
Cleveland, and diocese of York, endowed with £200
royal bounty, and £200 parliamentary grant, and in
the patronage of Mrs. Baldwin. The church is dedicated
to St. Elen. There is a place of worship for
Wesleyan Methodists. Thomas Dunnington, in 1733,
gave a school-house, with a residence for the master,
and an annuity of £2 towards his support; which,
with the annual sums of £2 by Robert Blythe, £2 by
Thomas Bradford, and £10. 10. by Robert Jefferson,
is paid for teaching twenty children.
