THORLEY, a parish in the hundred of BRAUGHIN, county of HERTFORD, 2 miles (S. S. W.) from Bishop's Stortford, containing 386 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Middlesex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £16. 13, 4., and in the patronage of the Bishop of London. The church, dedicated to St. James, has an embattled tower, surmounted by a lofty spire at the west end, and a Norman doorway on the south.
