THORNBURY, a parish in the hundred of BROXASH, county of HEREFORD, 4 miles (N. N. W.) from Bromyard, containing, with the township of Westwood, 183 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford, rated in the king's books at £5. 6. 8., and in the patronage of Mrs. Pytts. Wall Hill camp, in this parish, has a triple intrenchment, almost perfect, and is supposed to be a work of the ancient Britons. At Netherwood, in this parish, Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, who was beheaded in 1601, was born, in 1567.
