THORNTON (BISHOP), a chapelry in that part of the parish of RIPON which is in the liberty of RIPON, West riding of the county of YORK, 3 miles (N.N.W.) from Ripley, containing 647 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the jurisdiction of the peculiar court of Ripon, belonging to the Archbishop of York, endowed with £400 private benefaction, £600 royal bounty, and £900 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Ripon.
