THURCASTON, a parish in the western division of the hundred of GOSCOTE, county of LEICESTER, 3 miles (S. S.W.) from Mountsorrel, comprising the chapelry of Anstey, and the township of Cropston, and containing 1159 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Leicester, and diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king's books at £23. 7. 8., and in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of Emanuel College, Cambridge. The church is dedicated to All Saints. The Rev. Richard Hill, in 1730, bequeathed land, directing the produce to be applied for teaching twenty-two children. The zealous and venerable reformer, Dr. Hugh Latimer, Bishop of Worcester, was born here, about 1480. Doctor Hurd, also Bishop of Worcester, was for some time rector of this parish.
