THURGARTON, a parish in the southern division of the wapentake of THURGARTON, county of NOTTINGHAM, 3 miles (S. by W.) from Southwell, containing 330 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of York, endowed with £ 600 royal bounty, and £200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. An Augustine priory, in honour of St. Peter, was founded here, in 1130, by Ralph de Ayncourt, which, at the dissolution, had a revenue of £359. 15. 10.
