TILEHURST, a parish in the hundred of READING, county of BERKS, 2 miles (W.) from Reading, contain- ing 1760 inhabitants. The living is composed of a rectory and vicarage, united in 1586, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £21. 15. 2., and in the patronage of Mrs. Sophia Sheppard. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is a plain brick structure, containing some ancient brasses, and a sumptuous monument to the memory of Sir Peter Vanlore, Knt., who died in 1627- A chapel of ease has been lately erected at Theale, in this parish. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. This extensive parish is bounded on the north by the Thames, and on the south by the river Kennet. There are National schools for , children of both sexes, erected and supported by Mrs. Sophia Sheppard. Richard Lloyd, the learned Bishop of Worcester, was born here, in 1627; he died in 1717.
