TOSSEN (GREAT), a township in the parish of ROTHBURY, western division of COQUETDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 2 miles (W. S. W.) from Rothbury, containing 110 inhabitants, who are chiefly employed in the manufacture of woollen cloth, and at the limestone quarries in the neighbourhood. The village, situated on the river Coquet, was formerly a considerable place, and there are still the remains of an ancient tower.
