UPMINSTER, a parish in the hundred of CHAFFORD, county of ESSEX, 4 miles (E.S.E.) from Romford, containing 952 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £26. 13. 4," and in the patronage of W. Holden, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Lawrence. There is a place of worship for Independents. In the neighbourhood are many genteel residences: here is also a mineral spring. Dr. Derham, author of " Physico-Theology," &c., was rector of the parish from 1689 to 1735.
