UP-OTTERY, a parish in the hundred of AXMINSTER, county of DEVON, 5 miles (N.E. by N.) from Honiton, containing 886 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £15. 5.7., and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, has lately received an addition of one hundred and fifty sittings, of which one hundred are free, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £ 100 towards defraying the expense. There are places of worship for Baptists and Calvinistic Methodists. Fairs for cattle are held here on March 17th and October 24th. There was a chapel at Roridge, in this parish, at an early period.
