UPTON, or OVER-CHURCH, a parish in the,
lower division of the hundred of WIRRALL, county palatine
of CHESTER, 7 miles (N. by W.) from Great.
Neston, containing 183 inhabitants. The living is a
perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of
Chester, endowed with £600 royal boupty, and £200.
parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of .J. Feilden,
Esq. At Upton (from which, the parish church, called
Over-Church, is distant half a mile) a market was held
so late as. 1662; there are still two fairs for cattle. A.
court leet is held annually by the lord of the manor.
A free school here is conducted on the Madras system.
