UPTON, a parish in that part of the liberty of
SOUTHWELL-and-SCROOBY which separates the northern
from the southern division of the wapentake of THURGARTON,
county of NOTTINGHAM, 2 miles (E.) from
Southwell, containing 432 inhabitants. The living is
a discharged vicarage, in the peculiar jurisdiction and
patronage of the Chapter of the Collegiate Church of
Southwell, rate'd in the king's books at £4. 11.. 5.
The church, dedicated to St. Peter, is endowed with
lands, of the annual value of £20, for keeping it in
repair, the surplus to be given to poor soldiers travelling
through the place. Here is a considerable manufactory
for starch.
