UPWAY, a parish in the liberty of WAYHOUSE, Dorchester division of the county of DORSET, 4 miles (S.W. by S.) from Dorchester, containing 485 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Dorset, and diocese of Bristol, rated in the king's books at £18. 3. 1., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Salisbury. The church, dedicated to St. Lawrence, has an embattled tower crowned with pinnacles. Near it, from the foot of a steep hill, rises the small river Way, which runs through the parish, and falls into the sea at Weymouth. On Ridgway down are numerous barrows, extending from that part of the ridge opposite Sutton-Pointz to beyond Lorgbridy, a distance of nearly six miles, in a direction parallel to the Via Iceniana. In the neighbourhood are extensive quarries of flag-stone and tile-stone.
