URSWICK, a parish in the hundred of LONSDALE, north of the sands, county palatine of LANCASTER, 3 miles (S. W. by S.) from Ulverstone, containing, with the townships of Adgarley, Bardsea, Bolton, and Stainon, 787 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Richmond, and diocese of Chester, rated in the king's books at £7. 17. 6., endowed with £200 royal bounty, and £1200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Parishioners, The church, dedicated to St. Michael, which was repewed in 1826, is situated near a deep circular lake, half a mile in diameter. At Bolton are the remains of an ancient chapel, near which, Roman coins and a brass vessel upon three feet have been found. The grammar school was founded, in 1580, by William Marshall, who endowed it with a rent-charge of £15, for which forty boys are instructed.
