WALTHAM (GREAT), a parish in the hundred of CHELMSFORD, county of ESSEX, 4 miles (N. by W.) from Chelmsford, containing, with the chapelry of Black-Chapel, 1883 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £18. 13.4., and hi the patronage of the President and Fellows of Trinity College, Oxford. The church is dedicated to St. Mary and St. Lawrence. The river Chelmer runs through the parish. Courts leet and baron are held here on the Thursday in Whitsun-week.
