WALTON, a parish in ESKDALE ward, county of CUMBERLAND, comprising the townships of High and Low Walton, and containing 480 inhabitants, of which number, 177 are in High Walton, 10 miles (N.EbyE.), and 303 in Low Walton, 10 miles (N.EbyE.), from Carlisle. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £600 royal bounty, and in the patronage of Mrs, Dacre. The ancient Roman wall crossed the parish, which contained the station Petriana, the site of which is now called Castle Steads, and out of its ruins several houses have been built. From the blackness of the stones, it is thought that the ancient buildings had suffered greatly from fire: numerous inscriptions and other relics of antiquity have been discovered. A charity school, with a small endowment, was founded by J. Boustead, Esq.; and a Sunday school has been established, and is supported, by Mrs. Johnson.
