WALTON, a parish in the hundred of COLNEIS county of SUFFOLK, 10 miles (S. E. byE.) from Ipswich' containing 783 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, with that of Felixtow annexed, in the arch-, deaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £4. 6. 8., and in the patronage of Mr. Eagle and others. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a place of worship for Baptists. The parish has the river Deben on the east, Harwich harbour on the west, and the North sea on the south, where there is a Martello tower for the defence of the coast. A cell of Benedictine monks, subordinate to the monastery of Rochester was founded here in the reign of William Rufus, which continued till 1528, when it was given to Cardinal Wolsey, towards the endowment of his intended colleges.
