WARCOP, a parish in EAST ward, county of WESTMORLAND, comprising the hamlets of Bleatarn, Burton, Sandford, and Warcop, and containing 713 inhabitants, of which number, 369 are in the hamlet of Warcop, 3 miles (W. by N.) from Brough. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, rated in the king's books at &Q. 5. l-, and in the patronage of the Rev. W. M. S. Preston. The church is dedicated to St. Columba. There is a place of worship forWesleyan Methodists. The river Eden runs through the parish, in the mountainous part of which there is said to be lead, but no mines have been opened. In the village is an ancient cross> which was recently brought from the common, at the expense of the lord of the manor, who holds his court annually in June, or July. Castle hill, near its south-east end, is supposed to be the site of an ancient castle; and Kirksteads, near it, that of a chapel.
