WAVERLEY, a liberty (extra-parochial), in the hundred of FARNHAM, county of SURREY, 2 miles (S. E. by E.) from Farnham, containing 58 inhabitants. An abbey of Cistercian monks, in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was founded here, in 1128, by William Giffard, Bishop of Winchester, which, at the dissolution, had a revenue of £196. 13. 11.: it is said to have been the first of that order established in England. The remains are still considerable, and, though insufficient to give an idea of its original magnificence, have an interesting effect, much enhanced by the luxuriant ivy with which they are overgrown.
