WELFORD, a parish in the hundred of GUILSBOROUGH, county of NORTHAMPTON, 8 miles (S. W. by W.) from Market-Harborough, containing 1005 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, with that of Sibbertoft united, in the archdeaconry of Northampton, and diocese of Peterborough, rated in the king's books at £8, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Bishop of Oxford. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There are places of worship for Independents and Wesleyan Methodists. The Grand Union canal passes through the parish. The free school and premises here were purchased out of funds arising from the church and poor's lands; the income is £21.10. a year.
