WELNETHAM (GREAT), a parish in the hundred of THEDWESTRY, county of SUFFOLK, 3 miles (S. E. by S.) from Bury-St. Edmunds, containing 399 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £9. 15.7., and in the patronage of Sir H. E. Buribury, Bart. Here was a priory of Crouched, or Crossed, friars, subordinate to the principal house of that order, near the Tower of London.
