WHERSTEAD, a parish in the hundred of SAMFORD,
county of SUFFOLK, 2 miles (S. by "W.) from
Ipswich, containing 242 inhabitants. The living is a
discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Suffolk, and
diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £5.6.8y
and in. the patronage of the Crown. The church is
dedicated to St. Mary. The parish is bounded on thenorth-
east by the river Orwell.
