WHIMPLE, a parish in the hundred of CLISTON, county of DEVON, 4 miles (W.N.W.) from Ottery St. Mary, containing, with a portion of the tything of Rawleigh, which is in this parish, 557 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £30, and in the patronage of the Duke of Bedford. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. A fair for sheep is held on the Monday before Michaelmas-day.
