WHISTON, a parish in the hundred of WYMERSLEY, county of NORTHAMPTON, 6 miles (E. by S.) from Northampton, containing 47 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, to which a portion of the rectory of Denton is annexed, in the archdeaconry of Northampton, and diocese of Peterborough, rated in the king's books at £14. 11. 0., and in the patronage of Lord Boston. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, was built, about 1534, by Anthony Catesby, Esq.: it is remarkable for the beauty of its proportions, and is in the later English style of architecture, with a lofty and elegant tower crowned with rich pinnacles; the font is octagonal, with panelled sides handsomely executed. The river Nene runs through the parish, in which are the remains of a moated building, said to have been the residence of King John. Limestone abounds here. WHISTON, a township in that part of: the parish of PENKRIDGE which is in the eastern division of the hundred of CUTTLESTONE, county of STAFFORD, 2 miles (W.) from Penkridge. The population is returned with the township of Penkridge.
