WHITEWELL, a chapelry in that part of the parish of WHALLEY which is in the western division of the wapentake of STAINCLIFFE-and-EWCROSS, West riding of the county of YORK, 7 miles (N. W. by W.) from Clitheroe. The population is returned with the parish. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chester, endowed with £400 private benefaction, £400 royal bounty, and £200 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Vicar of Whalley. The chapel has lately received an addition of seventy free sittings, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £25 towards defraying the expense.
