WHITTINGHAM, a parish in the northern division of COQUETDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, comprising the townships of Callaley with Yetlington, Glanton, Lorbottle, Great Ryle, Little Ryle, Shawdon, and Whittingham, and containing 1749 inhabitants, of which number, 588 are in the township of Whittingham, 8 miles (W. by S.) from Alnwick. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Northumberland, and diocese of Durham, rated in the king's books at £12. 11. 3., and in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle. The church, dedicated to St. Bartholomew, has lately received an addition of one hundred and seventy-two sittings, of which one hundred are free, the Incorporated Society for the enlargement of churches and chapels having granted £50 towards defraying the expense. The river Aln runs through the parish, in which there is a vaulted tower, that has often afforded refuge and defence to the inhabitants during the border warfare.
