WHITTLE-le-WOODS, a township in the parish and hundred of LEYLAND, county palatine of LANCASTER, 2 miles (N.) from Chorley, containing 2083 inha- bitants. Here are several valuable millstone quarries; and a lead mine was formerly worked with great suc- cess. A school, erected by subscription in 1769, was endowed by Samuel Crooke, in 1770, with £220, now producing about £ 16 per annum, for which from fifteen to twenty children are educated.
