WHITTONSTALL, a chapelry in the parish of
BYWELL-ST-PETER, eastern division of TINDALE ward,
county of NORTHUMBERLAND, 10 miles (S.E.,byE.)
from Hexham, containing 146 inhabitants. The living
is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Northum-
berland, and diocese of Durham, endowed with £600
private benefaction, and £800 royal bounty, and in
the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Durham.
The chapel is dedicated to St. Philip and St. James.
The Roman Watling-street passes through the parish.
The Governors of Greenwich Hospital allow £15 a
year to a schoolmaster for teaching poor children.
