WITHINGTON (LOWER), a township in the parish of PRESTBURY, hundred of MACCLESFIELD, county palatine of CHESTER, 7 miles (N.N.W.) from Congleton, containing 615 inhabitants. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. Tunsted, a hill in this township, is supposed, from its Saxon etymology, viz., the place of a town, to have been the site of an ancient yille of some consequence. A school is supported here, by Mr. Parker, for the instruction of poor children.
