WITNESHAM, a parish in the hundred of CARLFORD, county of SUFFOLK, 4 miles (N. by B.) from Ipswich, containing 515 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Suifolk, and diocese of Norwich, rated in the king's books at £18. 13. 4., and in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of St. Peter's College, Cambridge. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. A singular discovery took place some time since in this parish; on removing some earth, the skeleton of a man in armour, seated on horseback, supposed to have been buried during some of the civil wars, was exposed to the view.
