WITSTON, a parish in the lower division of the hundred of CALDICOTT, county of MONMOUTH, 6 miles (S. E. by E.) from Newport, containing 91 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Llandaff, rated in:the king's books at £6. 7. 8., and in the alternate pa-: tronage of the Bishop of Llandaff and the Provost of Eton College. The church, according to tradition, belonged to Portown, a town once situated in the neighbourhood, but swallowed up by the sea at some remote period.
