WOODHAY (EAST), a parish in the hundred of EVINGAR, Kingsclere division of the county of SOUTHAMPTON, 10 miles (N. N. W.) from Whitchurch, containing 1206 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the peculiar jurisdiction' the Incumbent, rated in the king's books at £21. 6. Of., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Winchester. The church, dedicated to St. Martin, was rebuilt at the expense of- the parishioners, in 1823, and contains monuments to Bishops Kenn and Louth, who held the living. Ten children are taught to read for £8 a year, the interest of a bequest from the Rev. Joshua Wakefield, in 1753. A National school for about one hundred children is supported by voluntary contributions. Here was formerly a palace belonging to the Bishops of Winchester. Woodhay is within the jurisdiction of the Cheyney Court held at Winchester every Thursday, for the recovery of debts to any amount.
