WOODHORN, a parish in the eastern division of MORPETH ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, comprising the chapelry of Newbiggin, and the townships of Cresswell, Ellington, Hurst, Linmouth, North Seaton, and Woodhorn, and the demesne of Woodhorn, and containing 1378 inhabitants, of which number, 155 are in the township of Woodhorn, 8 miles (E. N.E.) from Morpeth. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Northumberland, and diocese of Durham, rated in the king's books at £21. 15. ?., and in the patronage of the Bishop of Durham. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient edifice, with the exception of the chancel, which has been added by the Master and Wardens of the Mercers' Company of London. Mr. Foster, in 1800, left £1200 for founding a free school here, but the bequest has not yet been so applied. The Rev. Thomas Triplett, in 1640, bequeathed a rent-charge of £5 for clothing and apprenticing poor children.
