WOODLANDS, a tything in the parish of HORTON, hundred of KNOWLTON, Shaston (East) division of the county of DORSET, 4 miles (S. S. W.) from Cranborne, containing 395 inhabitants. There is a placfe of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. A fair, which was transferred hither from Knowlton, is held on July 5th. The unfortunate Duke of Monmouth, after his flight from the battle of Sedgmore in Somersetshire, is stated to have been found here by his enemies, in a ditch under an ash tree, which is inscribed with the various names of those who have since visited the spot.
