WOOLVERCOTT, a parish in the hundred of WOOTTON, county of OXFORD, 2 miles (N. N. W.) from Oxford, containing 493 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Oxford, and in the patronage of the Warden and Fellows of Merton College, Oxford. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, is situated on the banks of the Isis. A National school is supported by voluntary contributions and annual subscriptions, aided by an annuity of £3 from the poor's estate; the income is £52, which' is paid to the master and mistress, who are also: allowed a dwelling-house rent-free, and teach aboutsixty- five boys and fifty-five girls. A . Benedictine abbey, in honour of the Virgin Mary and St. John the! Baptist, was founded. here, in 1138, by a pious lady, called Editha," which at the dissolution had a revenue of £319. 18. 8.
