WOOTTON-WAVEN, a parish in the Henley division of the hundred of BARLICHWAY, county of WARWICK, 1 mile (S.) from Henley in Arden, containing, with the chapelries of Henley in Arden and Ullenhall, and the hamlet of Aspley with Fordhall, 2248 inhabitants, The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and dioceseof Worcester, rated in the king's books at £11. 9. 7., endowedwith £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Provost and Fellows of King's College, Cambridge, The church, dedicated to St. Peter, is a noble edifice, principally in the later style of English architecture, with a fine tower rising from the centre; the south door is of early English architecture, and a small part of the building is in the decorated style. At the east end of the north aisle there is a large desk, in which is a number of old books, containing expositions, by, various authors, on the four Gospels; each volume is secured by a chain of sufficient length to reach outside the des; they were originally intended for the use of those who, with the permission of the priest, retired thither for study. There is a Roman Catholic chapel at Gromos, the seat of the Dowager Lady Smythe. The Stratford and Avon canal passes through the parish. A Benedictine priory, a cell to the abbey of Conches ia Normandy, was founded here by one of the Stafford family, the revenue. of which, at the stippression was. granted by Henry VI. to King's College, Cambridge.
