WRITHLINGTON, a parish in the hundred of KILMERSDON, county of SOMERSET, 7 miles (N. W. by N.) from Frome, containing 216 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells, rated in the king's brooks at £5. 7. 85., and in the patronage of the Prebendary of Writhlington in the Cathedral Church of Salisbury. The church is dedicated to St. Mary Magdajene. In this parish are extensive coal mines and quarries of freestone; white lias and fullers' earth ate also obtained here.
