MORTLESTOWN, a parish, in the barony of IFFA
and OFFA, county of TIPPERARY, and province of MUNSTER,
1½ mile (N. by E.) from Cahir, on the road from
Clonmel to Cashel; containing 574 inhabitants, and
comprising 1835 statute acres, as applotted under the
tithe act. It is a rectory, in the diocese of Lismore,
forming part of the union of Outragh; the tithes amount
to £150. An improper presentation to this benefice
was one of the charges brought against the Earl of
Strafford, when impeached by the English parliament.
Here are the ruins of a castle, which appears to have
been formerly of considerable extent.
